Luke Chapter 97 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen.9 Herod said, āJohn I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?ā And he sought to see him. Mark Chapter 614 King Herod heard of it, for Jesusā name had become known. Some said, āJohn the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.ā15 But others said, āHe is Elijah.ā And others said, āHe is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.ā16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, āJohn, whom I beheaded, has been raised.ā17 For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philipās wife, because he had married her.18 For John had been saying to Herod, āIt is not lawful for you to have your brotherās wife.ā19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not,20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.22 For when Herodiasās daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, āAsk me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.ā23 And he vowed to her, āWhatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.ā24 And she went out and said to her mother, āFor what should I ask?ā And she said, āThe head of John the Baptist.ā25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, āI want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.ā26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her.27 And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring Johnās head. He went and beheaded him in the prison28 and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. Matthew Chapter 141 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus,2 and he said to his servants, āThis is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.ā3 For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philipās wife,4 because John had been saying to him, āIt is not lawful for you to have her.ā5 And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.6 But when Herodās birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod,7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.8 Prompted by her mother, she said, āGive me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.ā9 And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given.10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison,11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.12 And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus. |
