John Chapter 11 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 He was in the beginning with God.3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, āThis was he of whom I said, āHe who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.ā ā)16 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Fatherās side, he has made him known.19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, āWho are you?ā20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, āI am not the Christ.ā21 And they asked him, āWhat then? Are you Elijah?ā He said, āI am not.ā āAre you the Prophet?ā And he answered, āNo.ā22 So they said to him, āWho are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?ā23 He said, āI am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, āMake straight the way of the Lord,āas the prophet Isaiah said.ā24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)25 They asked him, āThen why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?ā26 John answered them, āI baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.ā28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, āBehold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!30 This is he of whom I said, āAfter me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.ā31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.ā32 And John bore witness: āI saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, āHe on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.ā34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.ā35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, āBehold, the Lamb of God!ā37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, āWhat are you seeking?ā And they said to him, āRabbiā (which means Teacher), āwhere are you staying?ā39 He said to them, āCome and you will see.ā So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peterās brother.41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, āWe have found the Messiahā (which means Christ).42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, āSo you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephasā (which means Peter).43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, āFollow me.ā44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, āWe have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.ā46 Nathanael said to him, āCan anything good come out of Nazareth?ā Philip said to him, āCome and see.ā47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, āBehold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!ā48 Nathanael said to him, āHow do you know me?ā Jesus answered him, āBefore Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.ā49 Nathanael answered him, āRabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!ā50 Jesus answered him, āBecause I said to you, āI saw you under the fig tree,ādo you believe? You will see greater things than these.ā51 And he said to him, āTruly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.ā Luke Chapter 31 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, āThe voice of one crying in the wilderness: āPrepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways,6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.ā ā7 He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, āYou brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8 Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, āWe have Abraham as our father.āFor I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.ā10 And the crowds asked him, āWhat then shall we do?ā11 And he answered them, āWhoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.ā12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, āTeacher, what shall we do?ā13 And he said to them, āCollect no more than you are authorized to do.ā14 Soldiers also asked him, āAnd we, what shall we do?ā And he said to them, āDo not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.ā15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ,16 John answered them all, saying, āI baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.ā18 So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people.19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brotherās wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done,20 added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison.21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened,22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, āYou are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.ā23 Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Sala, the son of Nahshon,33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah,36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan,38 the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God. Mark Chapter 11 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, āBehold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: āPrepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,ā ā4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.6 Now John was clothed with camelās hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.7 And he preached, saying, āAfter me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.ā9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.11 And a voice came from heaven, āYou are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.ā12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,15 and saying, āThe time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.ā16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.17 And Jesus said to them, āFollow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.ā18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,24 āWhat have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you areāthe Holy One of God.ā25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, āBe silent, and come out of him!ā26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, āWhat is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.ā28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.29 And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.30 Now Simonās mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons.33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door.34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him,37 and they found him and said to him, āEveryone is looking for you.ā38 And he said to them, āLet us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.ā39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.40 And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, āIf you will, you can make me clean.ā41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, āI will; be clean.ā42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once,44 and said to him, āSee that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.ā45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter. Matthew Chapter 31 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,2 āRepent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.ā3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, āThe voice of one crying in the wilderness: āPrepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.ā ā4 Now John wore a garment of camelās hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him,6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, āYou brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, āWe have Abraham as our father,āfor I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.11 āI baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.ā13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.14 John would have prevented him, saying, āI need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?ā15 But Jesus answered him, āLet it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.ā Then he consented.16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, āThis is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.ā |
