Luke Chapter 1129 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, āThis generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.30 For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.31 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.32 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.33 āNo one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness.36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.ā Luke Chapter 1137 While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table.38 The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.39 And the Lord said to him, āNow you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.40 You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?41 But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.42 āBut woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.44 Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.ā45 One of the lawyers answered him, āTeacher, in saying these things you insult us also.ā46 And he said, āWoe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.47 Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.48 So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs.49 Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, āI will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,ā50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.52 Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.ā53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things,54 lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say. Luke Chapter 201 One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up2 and said to him, āTell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.ā3 He answered them, āI also will ask you a question. Now tell me,4 was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?ā5 And they discussed it with one another, saying, āIf we say, āFrom heaven,āhe will say, āWhy did you not believe him?ā6 But if we say, āFrom man,āall the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.ā7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from.8 And Jesus said to them, āNeither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.ā Mark Chapter 1127 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him,28 and they said to him, āBy what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?ā29 Jesus said to them, āI will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.30 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.ā31 And they discussed it with one another, saying, āIf we say, āFrom heaven,āhe will say, āWhy then did you not believe him?ā32 But shall we say, āFrom manā?āāthey were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet.33 So they answered Jesus, āWe do not know.ā And Jesus said to them, āNeither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.ā Mark Chapter 71 Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem,2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders,4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.)5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, āWhy do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?ā6 And he said to them, āWell did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, ā āThis people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.ā8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.ā9 And he said to them, āYou have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!10 For Moses said, āHonor your father and your motherā; and, āWhoever reviles father or mother must surely die.ā11 But you say, āIf a man tells his father or his mother, āWhatever you would have gained from me is Corbanā ā(that is, given to God)ā12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,13 thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.ā14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, āHear me, all of you, and understand:15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.ā17 And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable.18 And he said to them, āThen are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?ā (Thus he declared all foods clean.)20 And he said, āWhat comes out of a person is what defiles him.21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.ā Mark Chapter 810 And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.11 The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, āWhy does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.ā13 And he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.14 Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.15 And he cautioned them, saying, āWatch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.ā16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread.17 And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, āWhy are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened?18 Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember?19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?ā They said to him, āTwelve.ā20 āAnd the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?ā And they said to him, āSeven.ā21 And he said to them, āDo you not yet understand?ā Matthew Chapter 151 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,2 āWhy do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.ā3 He answered them, āAnd why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?4 For God commanded, āHonor your father and your mother,āand, āWhoever reviles father or mother must surely die.ā5 But you say, āIf anyone tells his father or his mother, āWhat you would have gained from me is given to God,ā6 he need not honor his father.ā So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:8 ā āThis people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.ā ā10 And he called the people to him and said to them, āHear and understand:11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.ā12 Then the disciples came and said to him, āDo you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?ā13 He answered, āEvery plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.14 Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.ā15 But Peter said to him, āExplain the parable to us.ā16 And he said, āAre you also still without understanding?17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.20 These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.ā Matthew Chapter 161 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.2 He answered them, āWhen it is evening, you say, āIt will be fair weather, for the sky is red.ā3 And in the morning, āIt will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.āYou know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.ā So he left them and departed.5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread.6 Jesus said to them, āWatch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.ā7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, āWe brought no bread.ā8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, āO you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.ā12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Matthew Chapter 2123 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, āBy what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?ā24 Jesus answered them, āI also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?ā And they discussed it among themselves, saying, āIf we say, āFrom heaven,āhe will say to us, āWhy then did you not believe him?ā26 But if we say, āFrom man,āwe are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.ā27 So they answered Jesus, āWe do not know.ā And he said to them, āNeither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. |
