Mark Chapter 71 Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem,2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders,4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.)5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, āWhy do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?ā6 And he said to them, āWell did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, ā āThis people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.ā8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.ā9 And he said to them, āYou have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!10 For Moses said, āHonor your father and your motherā; and, āWhoever reviles father or mother must surely die.ā11 But you say, āIf a man tells his father or his mother, āWhatever you would have gained from me is Corbanā ā(that is, given to God)ā12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,13 thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.ā14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, āHear me, all of you, and understand:15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.ā17 And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable.18 And he said to them, āThen are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?ā (Thus he declared all foods clean.)20 And he said, āWhat comes out of a person is what defiles him.21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.ā Matthew Chapter 151 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,2 āWhy do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.ā3 He answered them, āAnd why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?4 For God commanded, āHonor your father and your mother,āand, āWhoever reviles father or mother must surely die.ā5 But you say, āIf anyone tells his father or his mother, āWhat you would have gained from me is given to God,ā6 he need not honor his father.ā So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:8 ā āThis people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.ā ā10 And he called the people to him and said to them, āHear and understand:11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.ā12 Then the disciples came and said to him, āDo you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?ā13 He answered, āEvery plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.14 Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.ā15 But Peter said to him, āExplain the parable to us.ā16 And he said, āAre you also still without understanding?17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.20 These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.ā |
