Luke Chapter 718 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John,19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, āAre you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?ā20 And when the men had come to him, they said, āJohn the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, āAre you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?ā ā21 In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight.22 And he answered them, āGo and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.23 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.ā24 When Johnās messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: āWhat did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kingsā courts.26 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.27 This is he of whom it is written, ā āBehold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.ā28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.ā29 (When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John,30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)31 āTo what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, ā āWe played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.ā33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, āHe has a demon.ā34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, āLook at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!ā35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.ā Matthew Chapter 111 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples3 and said to him, āAre you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?ā4 And Jesus answered them, āGo and tell John what you hear and see:5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.6 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.ā7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: āWhat did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?8 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kingsā houses.9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.10 This is he of whom it is written, ā āBehold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.ā11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force.13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John,14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.16 āBut to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,17 ā āWe played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.ā18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, āHe has a demon.ā19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, āLook at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!āYet wisdom is justified by her deeds.ā |
