The Syrophoenician Woman

Jesus stands among His disciples as a Gentile woman bends low before Him, pleading with urgent faith. Her covered posture and clasped hands show the humility of the Syrophoenician woman, also called the Canaanite woman in Matthew’s account, who begged Jesus to deliver her daughter from demonic oppression. The disciples gather nearby, some watchful and uncertain, while Christ extends His hand in measured compassion and divine authority.

The scene reflects the encounter in Matthew 15:21-28 and Mark 7:24-30, where the woman persists even when tested by silence and hard words about the children’s bread. Her answer—accepting even the crumbs that fall from the table—reveals a faith that recognizes the abundance of mercy in Christ. Jesus commends her great faith, and her daughter is healed.
