Surprise Guest

Mary appears at the doorway with a warm greeting while Elizabeth, visibly pregnant and seated with her sewing, turns in startled welcome. The domestic room, basket of yarn, needlework, and small animals give the sacred meeting an intimate household setting. The subject is the Visitation, when Mary traveled to the hill country of Judah after receiving the angel’s message and entered the home of Zechariah and Elizabeth. In Luke’s account, Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit, the child in her womb leaps, and she blesses Mary as “the mother of my Lord.” The scene highlights faith, recognition, and the hidden work of God before the births of Jesus and John the Baptist, making it especially fitting for Advent, women’s ministry, children’s Bible lessons, and teaching on the incarnation.
