Favored Son

Description
Joseph stands near the family tent wearing the richly ornamented coat given by his father, while his brothers gather apart beneath the palms and speak with visible resentment. The desert encampment setting, shepherd staffs, and travel garments place the scene within the household of Jacob, where favoritism stirred jealousy among the sons of Israel. The distinctive robe marks Joseph as the beloved son, but it also becomes the outward sign of division within the family. In Genesis 37, Jacob’s special love for Joseph provokes hatred from his brothers, preparing the way for betrayal and, through God’s providence, the preservation of many lives. This artwork serves well for teaching on jealousy, family conflict, favoritism, Joseph’s early life, and God’s sovereign work through human wrongdoing.
