Acts Chapter 101 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort,2 a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, āCornelius.ā4 And he stared at him in terror and said, āWhat is it, Lord?ā And he said to him, āYour prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.5 And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter.6 He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.ā7 When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him,8 and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.9 The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray.10 And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance11 and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth.12 In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air.13 And there came a voice to him: āRise, Peter; kill and eat.ā14 But Peter said, āBy no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.ā15 And the voice came to him again a second time, āWhat God has made clean, do not call common.ā16 This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.17 Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simonās house, stood at the gate18 and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there.19 And while Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, āBehold, three men are looking for you.20 Rise and go down and accompany them without hesitation, for I have sent them.ā21 And Peter went down to the men and said, āI am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your coming?ā22 And they said, āCornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say.ā23 So he invited them in to be his guests. The next day he rose and went away with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.24 And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.25 When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him.26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, āStand up; I too am a man.ā27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many persons gathered.28 And he said to them, āYou yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean.29 So when I was sent for, I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me.ā30 And Cornelius said, āFour days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing31 and said, āCornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God.32 Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.ā33 So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.ā34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: āTruly I understand that God shows no partiality,35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.36 As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all),37 you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.39 And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree,40 but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear,41 not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.43 To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.ā44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,47 āCan anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?ā48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. Leviticus Chapter 111 And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them,2 āSpeak to the people of Israel, saying, These are the living things that you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth.3 Whatever parts the hoof and is cloven-footed and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat.4 Nevertheless, among those that chew the cud or part the hoof, you shall not eat these: The camel, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you.5 And the rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you.6 And the hare, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you.7 And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.8 You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.9 āThese you may eat, of all that are in the waters. Everything in the waters that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat.10 But anything in the seas or the rivers that has not fins and scales, of the swarming creatures in the waters and of the living creatures that are in the waters, is detestable to you.11 You shall regard them as detestable; you shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall detest their carcasses.12 Everything in the waters that has not fins and scales is detestable to you.13 āAnd these you shall detest among the birds; they shall not be eaten; they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,14 the kite, the falcon of any kind,15 every raven of any kind,16 the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the hawk of any kind,17 the little owl, the cormorant, the short-eared owl,18 the barn owl, the tawny owl, the carrion vulture,19 the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.20 āAll winged insects that go on all fours are detestable to you.21 Yet among the winged insects that go on all fours you may eat those that have jointed legs above their feet, with which to hop on the ground.22 Of them you may eat: the locust of any kind, the bald locust of any kind, the cricket of any kind, and the grasshopper of any kind.23 But all other winged insects that have four feet are detestable to you.24 āAnd by these you shall become unclean. Whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening,25 and whoever carries any part of their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.26 Every animal that parts the hoof but is not cloven-footed or does not chew the cud is unclean to you. Everyone who touches them shall be unclean.27 And all that walk on their paws, among the animals that go on all fours, are unclean to you. Whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening,28 and he who carries their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean to you.29 āAnd these are unclean to you among the swarming things that swarm on the ground: the mole rat, the mouse, the great lizard of any kind,30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon.31 These are unclean to you among all that swarm. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until the evening.32 And anything on which any of them falls when they are dead shall be unclean, whether it is an article of wood or a garment or a skin or a sack, any article that is used for any purpose. It must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; then it shall be clean.33 And if any of them falls into any earthenware vessel, all that is in it shall be unclean, and you shall break it.34 Any food in it that could be eaten, on which water comes, shall be unclean. And all drink that could be drunk from every such vessel shall be unclean.35 And everything on which any part of their carcass falls shall be unclean. Whether oven or stove, it shall be broken in pieces. They are unclean and shall remain unclean for you.36 Nevertheless, a spring or a cistern holding water shall be clean, but whoever touches a carcass in them shall be unclean.37 And if any part of their carcass falls upon any seed grain that is to be sown, it is clean,38 but if water is put on the seed and any part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.39 āAnd if any animal which you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening,40 and whoever eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. And whoever carries the carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.41 āEvery swarming thing that swarms on the ground is detestable; it shall not be eaten.42 Whatever goes on its belly, and whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet, any swarming thing that swarms on the ground, you shall not eat, for they are detestable.43 You shall not make yourselves detestable with any swarming thing that swarms, and you shall not defile yourselves with them, and become unclean through them.44 For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming thing that crawls on the ground.45 For I am the LORD who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.ā46 This is the law about beast and bird and every living creature that moves through the waters and every creature that swarms on the ground,47 to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean and between the living creature that may be eaten and the living creature that may not be eaten. |
