The Dead Jesus

Jesus Christ lies lifeless at the foot of the cross, His crowned head lowered and His wounded body wrapped in a burial cloth. Around Him gather grieving disciples and holy women, including the sorrowing figure of Mary, while a standing disciple watches beneath the darkened sky. The vertical beam of the cross rises behind them, anchoring the scene in the aftermath of Calvary and the beginning of Christ’s burial.

The composition reflects the Gospel accounts after the crucifixion, when those who loved Jesus remained near Him and prepared His body for the tomb. The dead Christ is shown not as defeat, but as the sacrificial Lamb whose suffering fulfills redemption. This subject is especially suited for Holy Week, Good Friday, Passion devotion, funeral ministry, and teaching on the cost of salvation.
